A Basic Explanation of How to Make a Quilt

Are you interested in trying to quilt? It really isn’t too hard and with a little know how anyone can do it. Strip quilting is a great way to get the hang of quilting. With just a small investment into tools you can create your won beautiful (and warm) works of art.

You will need to get a large self healing cutting mat, a rotary cutter, and an acrylic quilting ruler before you begin to think about quilting. These become the core tools of your new hobby to be utilized for cutting your fabric. For strip quilting you will be cutting the fabric into two and a half inch strips and then sewing them together with a quarter inch seam. By sewing three – two and a half inch strips together using a quarter inch seam, you will end up with a six and a half inch wide strip of fabric.

By then cutting this fabric into six and a half inch squares you have some squares to start to move arount to creat a pattern you desire. Continue to cut and arrange squares until your quilt is the size you wish it to be.  Then you will sew the squares together to make rows. Then you will sew these completed rows together.  Your top will begin to come together.

You will need to purchase quilt batting and a backing fabric for your quilt. Think of this as creating a sandwich with the batting as the center between the top and the bottom fo the quilt.  Once you have everything lined up you will need to safety pin it all together. The safety pins help to keep everything in its place while you hand quilt or machine quilt your piece. If you don’t feel you are ready to quilt or your sewing machine is not able to do it, you can also tie the quilt with yarn.

Finally to finish your blanket you will need to put the edging onto the blanket. It is the most easy to use double folded bias ribbon for this. There are a lot of great online resources for learning how to quilt such as at how to quilt.  You can also find a ton of great books regarding the subject. Think about starting small, like a baby blanket for example.
