Hot Tub Maintenance

If you know anyone who owns a house with a pool, you have probably heard horror stories from them about a time (or worse, a bunch of times) when one little mistake – maybe forgetting to add certain chemicals, or maybe adding too much or too little of a chemical – put their pool out of commission for weeks. Many people hear such stories and think, “Hot tubs must be so much easier to take care of than pools.” After all, hot tubs are a lot smaller than pools. That must count for something. Plus, a hot tub doesn’t have the sun shining on it all day long. Hot tubs are probably a piece of cake to take care of; you can probably goof up on hot tubs all the time, and it will hardly even matter, right? Actually, this is absolutely wrong.

It is far more important that you keep up with hot tub maintenance, and hot tub maintenance is also far more tedious. It is more difficult to keep a hot tub balanced than it is to keep a pool balanced, because it is more difficult to keep a smaller amount of water balanced than a larger amount of water. The best thing to remember if you have a hot tub, or if you plan to someday have a hot tub, is that you should keep a treatment schedule.

When you keep a hot tub schedule, there will be things you need to do each day, things you need to do each week, and things you will have to do each month. Balancing the pH levels in the hot tub will be one of your daily tasks. It does not take long to check the pH levels, and as long as they are balanced, you will not have to do anything more each day as far as this goes. Make sure you check it daily, though; things can swing drastically out of balance in a very short span of time if you do not stay on top of it. Also, you should plan to check the waterline each day, or at least every couple days. Weekly, you need to make sure you add all the important products such as oxidizer, non-chlorine shock, and foam reducer. The best way to remember to do this each week is to pick a specific day on which you will do these things each week. Finally, you should give the filters of your hot tub a thorough cleaning every month.

A hot tub can be a lot of fun for yourself, your family, and your friends. And it can be easy to take care of a hot tub, as long as you are consistent in taking care of it. But if you do not keep up with the maintenance, your hot tub will not be any fun at all!
