So you’ve decided to begin a meditation practice, but aren’t sure how. These tips will help you get started on what is sure to be an enjoyable and healthful meditation practice.
Educate yourself on types of meditation philosophies. You could also go to a meditation retreat center or visit a meditation group to speak to other people who have practiced for years. If you engage in group meditation, listen to a lecture, or try a weekend of the practice, you’ll enter your daily private practice with greater knowledge and conviction.
As you commit to a practice, you may wish to set aside a special space for meditation. If you have the space, section off one piece of your living area for the purpose of meditation. A sunroom, office, or bedroom closet is perfect. Surround yourself with colors and images that promote restful feelings and serenity. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit for long periods of time; a meditation rug or set of cushions may be helpful. You will want to set up a timer of some sort so you will never be distracted by the time, but can trust the alarm to go off when your time is up.
Add other special touches as if appropriate for your chosen forms of meditation. For example, you may wish to use music and tuning bowls. Many people find they enjoy the scents of aromatherapy candles or incense when meditating. You may also wish to create a meditation alter full of special memorabilia, religious icons, and other mementos of significance. Decorate your meditation space such that it inspires you and draws you in.
When you have an appropriate space set up, establish a commitment to a particular amount of time every day. Seat yourself in a comfortable position, using your cushions to support you. Begin your practice with a session focused on your breath or a single mantra. As you establish a daily meditation practice, you’ll notice your ability to focus and to handle stress will improve.
