Three Key Hockey Rules To Know

Now that the Stanley Cup Finals are being played, you may have been tuning in to watch some of the games, but if you do not watch hockey regularly, you might be confused by some of the things that happen in the game; after all – as is the case with any sport – hockey does not make a whole lot of sense unless you know the basic rules!

You can simplify hockey by thinking of it as soccer on ice, as this will give you a better feel for the manner in which the game is played; even with this approach to understanding hockey, however, there are still a few specific rules you will need to make sure you know.

Offsides: You are probably familiar with the term “offsides” from watching football and soccer, but the rules for offsides in hockey are a bit different; the hockey rink is divided into three zones, the attacking zone, the neutral zone, and the defending zone, with the two blue lines on the ice denoting where each one starts and stops – and with this information in your pocket, it is easy to understand offsides, as offsides occurs when a player crosses into the attacking zone before the puck!

Icing: Icing is similar to offsides, but it deals with the puck being sent too far up the ice at once; if a player is on the other side of the center red line, and they send the puck all the way past the red line at the far end of the ice, they will be called for icing as soon as a defending player touches the puck, and a faceoff will occur.

Penalties: When a hockey player is called for a penalty, they will be sent off the ice completely for two minutes, and that player cannot be replaced; this creates a “Power Play” for the opposing team, where they are playing with more players on the ice than the other team for two minutes, and will be constantly on the attack during that time.

Of course, the game of hockey still has plenty of other nuances and intricacies, but by understanding these three primary rules of hockey, you will be in much better shape for understanding the game as a whole!

Tips For Keeping Hats Clean

You will buy hats that will have no choice but to get dirty, as you might plan to wear certain hats to the beach, or while fishing, or while hiking, or even while simply attending your son’s baseball games or your daughter’s soccer games. But while it is no problem if hats such as these get dirty (some might even say dirt on such hats gives them “character”!), there will also be certain hats – perhaps a nice fedora, or a “church hat” – that you will want to keep from getting dirty.

Before you do anything else, you will want to pick up some weather-resistant spray that you can coat your hat with if you are hoping to keep it clean for a long time to come; one product that works especially well is McNatt ReviveX Spray On, and if you shop for it on Amazon, you will actually be able to get a great deal on it as well (and it works on plenty more than just hats!).

Just about anything you wear will tend to get its colors faded by the sun, but this is especially true with hats, as they will be pointed toward the sun whenever you wear them outside on a sunny day; because of the way in which the sun can wreak havoc on a hat, you should avoid wearing outside on sunny days if you are hoping to keep it from fading.

And more than anything, sweat can dirty up a hat, giving it a bad odor and some funny-looking stains; when you are going to be active, or are going to be outside on a hot day, wear something besides the hat you are trying to keep clean.

A nice hat should be able to last you for many years – you simply have to take these steps, and you will be able to keep that nice hat looking nice for a long time to come.

Three Things You Need To Know About Writing A Novel

If you have ever had a desire to write a novel, you might have thought that the process for accomplishing this task goes something like this: sit down, start writing, and when you finish, get the book published; actually, however, there is plenty more that goes into the process than this. Even though you will face a long and arduous road toward publication, the rewards at the end of the road are great; before you ever get to the “business side” of the process, however – with agents and editors and bookstores – there are a few important things you need to make sure you know about the writing process itself.

Write with the door closed: One mistake many people make is “sharing” their story with people while they are writing it; it is natural to be excited and to want to share, but it is important to “write with the door closed.” When you start to share bits and pieces of your story early on, your story will have a much harder time growing and maturing; because of this, you should “write with the door closed” – waiting to share your story with anyone until it is finished!

Become a part of the Novel Writing Academy!

Pick the right “first readers”: You will need to find some “beta readers” after you have finished writing the first draft of your story; these should be readers who you are close to, and who will be honest with you about what they do and do not like about your story.

Edit, edit, edit: The biggest mistake many green writers make is assuming they have “finished” their novel when they write the last word, but actually, the writing of the novel is the easiest (and least time-consuming) part of the whole ordeal; now, it is time to edit your story and make it perfect – and when it comes to this part of the process, patience will be key!

After you have finished editing (and have a product that you truly feel belongs on bookshelves), you will be ready to start approaching agents and editors, enjoying your novel’s emergence into the world!

Make A Homemade Bird Feeder!

One thing that your children might really enjoy is a bird feeder, but while it can be simple and fun to go out and buy a bird feeder, it can often be even more fun to make a bird feeder with your child! There are a number of different ways for making a bird feeder at home, but here are a few different ways to keep in mind that are both easy and effective!

Orange peel feeder: This is a really fun one, and all you will need is an orange, some peanut butter, and a pile of bird seed. Simply peel the orange in a circular manner – making sure it comes off in a long, circular strand – then coat the inside of the orange peel in peanut butter, sprinkle it with bird seed, and hang it from the branch of a tree!

Pine cone feeder: Similar to the feeder just discussed, the only additional items you will need once you have the pine cone is some peanut butter and some seeds! Hold the pine cone upright, and use a spoon or a brush to coat it with peanut butter - making sure you get down into all the crevices – then fill it up with bird seed and hang your new “feeder” from a tree!

Paint your own feeder: There are also a number of different options that enable you to buy a fully functional feeder and paint it yourself, which can be a fun way to put up a bird feeder that your child feels has a touch that is uniquely “theirs,” without having to make a bird feeder on your own. If you buy one of these feeders for your child (or for your children!), make sure you take the time to paint it with them, as it will be a memory that sticks out in their mind every time they look out the window to watch the bird feeder!

Not only can bird feeders be entertaining and educational, but when you build one yourself, they can also be a whole lot of fun!

Making The Most Of Your Work Travel

While some people enjoy traveling for work, many others see it as a big inconvenience; regardless of which of the two categories you fall into, however, it will be beneficial for you to know the steps that you can take in order optimize your work travel. After all, if you have to travel, you might as well know how to make the most of it – instead of just being stuck complaining the whole time about how you are having to travel for work!

One of the best ways to enjoy your work travel is to establish friendships with the people with whom you will be working during your time away; when you do this, the week of travel will feel a lot more like “hanging out with friends” than like a week of work!

On the other hand, some people are typically introverted in their everyday life, instead of being extroverted; if this is the case for you, your work travel can be one of the best times for you to recharge by spending time alone, as you will be in an unfamiliar place, with a quiet hotel room in which you can relax and unwind.

You should also try exploring some of the surrounding areas whenever you find yourself doing some work travel; while most people think of this when they are traveling to a “cool” city, they fail to recognize that there are plenty of “cool” things to explore no matter where they are! When you are traveling, find out what the attractions are in the area; consider going to a well-regarded restaurant in the area, or visit a baseball game or basketball game, or find out where the locals hang out so you can get a feel for the local life!

Following these tips might not make you suddenly love work travel if you are currently the sort of person who hates it – but these tips will go a long way in making work travel a whole lot more bearable!

Keeping Your Bonfires Safe

Bonfires are always great to have any time you are out camping or hanging out on the beach at nighttime! But in addition to how fun bonfires are, they can also be dangerous if you are not careful, as they are quite literally an instance of “playing with fire.” Make sure you are aware of all these simple safety measures that you should take before you ever go out and build a bonfire of your own.

You will want to dig a pit in which you can build your bonfire – before you even go out to collect the wood for the bonfire! This pit will help to keep your bonfire confined to a single, designated space instead of allowing it to spread across the ground.

The other thing you need to do to make sure the fire stays where it is supposed to stay instead of spreading across the ground is put rocks around the hole you dug. The rocks you pile around the pit do not need to be huge, but they should be big enough to allow you to bulid a continuous ring around the pit.

One thing you should absolutely never do – no matter how tempting it might be at times – is use lighter fluid to start your fire. When you use lighter fluid to start your bonfire, you can put yourself in a position you do not want to be in, as it can be difficult to predict what your fire will do. Instead, you should get the fire going by lighting a small amount of kindling, and then adding this kindling to other kindling you have stacked under the wood. Even though it is certainly easier to douse the logs in lighter fluid and toss in a match, it is much safer to do it the other way.

Most people know that they should not leave a dying fire behind, as even a dying fire can start to spread. But somehow, many people fail to realize that they should not leave a live fire behind either; don’t ever walk away from your fire – there should always be at least one person staying with the fire to watch it!

Follow these simple tips, and you will always be able to enjoy a bonfire while camping or while hanging out on the beach without putting anyone in danger!

Shedd Aquarium In Chicago

If you are planning a trip to Chicago this summer, one of the areas you are sure to spend time around is Lake Shore Drive, which runs along the waterfront of Lake Michigan – and as you are spending time on Lake Shore Drive, one of the places you will probably stop by is the museum district. When you are in the museum district, make sure you budget in some time to spend at Shedd Aquarium, which is one of the most popular (and most highly-regarded) aquariums in the world!

If you want to get the full effect of the aquarium, you need to make sure you budget a minimum of a half day, and if you have children, you might want to have a little more time than this, as they are likely going to want to linger in a number of different areas.

Shedd Aquarium has a wonderful program and map that you can pick up at the front desk when you visit, which lists all the different areas of the aquarium as well as all the “talks” you can plan to attend during your time at the aquarium. The experts who conduct the “talks” at Shedd Aquarium are a treasure trove of knowledge, and in addition to being able to learn a lot by listening to these experts, you are also sure to come up with plenty of questions (questions that these experts are sure to know the answers to!).

In addition to the incredible assortment of fish on display in the center tank, Shedd Aquarium also has a world-renowned shark display, several beautiful beluga whales, and a great collection of dolphins (the latter two of whom you can see from both above the water and from a glass front under the water!).

Shedd Aquarium is sure to give you everything you could want in an aquarium if you are an aquarium lover; but even if you are not an aquarium lover, you will certainly have a great time visiting Shedd and seeing all the beautiful animals.

Affiliate Marketing is One of the Most Cost-Effective Ways to Advertise your Business

Ever heard of affiliate programs? These are forms of Internet advertising that rewards the affiliates for driving traffic to the advertiser or for other transactions. The advertiser pays the affiliate to place a link on their website, and the affiliate sends traffic to the advertiser in return. Simply put, it’s about paying commissions to people who help you make sales. It’s that easy.

Affiliate marketing has its ups and downs. It could be draining if you are not armed with updated information and the technical how-tos. But this article’s sole objective is to reach out to you and not to badmouth affiliate marketing.

Here are the following reasons on why web marketers go gaga over affiliate marketing as a form of Internet advertisement.

1. Low cost

Many are scared to go on a home based business because of the capital required. In affiliate marketing, you don’t have to spend much to start raking in moolah.

2. Inventories not included

Product management fuss could be very stressing. An inventory is not asked to be maintained. The merchant does the maintenance required.

3. Unlimited income through leverage

When you have a paid job, your monthly income mainly relies on whether you go to work or not. With affiliate marketing, your affiliates could all just lead traffic to your site without having to lift a finger after providing them your ad copy and links. Though not every web marketer earns limitless, it still is a fact that all the necessary matters for the advertiser or Internet marketer are all there to be successful.

4. Go worldwide

With affiliate marketing, you are dealing with a global market place. All you have to do is choose a niche product and prepare all the necessary tools for your affiliates to lead traffic from just about anywhere to your website.

5. Low risk

The very main reason for Internet marketer’s enthusiasm with affiliate marketing is its having a low risk factor. Especially for those with low budget set aside for advertising, affiliate marketing is just the way to do it.

6. No closing time

With affiliate marketing, your business works every single second of the day while targeting a worldwide market! What could be better than that?

But all of these will be put to waste if you don’t have the right niche product and all the other important tools to make it big in affiliate marketing, i.e., well-SEO-ed website. So better work on this first before ever considering those benefits.

Booking A Great Hotel For Your Trip To Rome

If you are planning to take a trip to Rome, it can be tough to pick a hotel when you realize that there are hundreds of options you have to narrow down. After all, you want to make sure that you allow yourself to experience Rome without being distracted the whole time by a hotel room that you loathe! And what’s more, you may be planning your trip to Rome with a specific budget in mind, and you will have to be aware of this budget when you pick a hotel. If you are planning a week in Rome – or even if you will just be passing through the city for a couple nights – all three of these hotels are great choices.

Artimede Hotel in Rome caters to those with a big budget, as some rooms cost as much as $500 a night. But the hotel also caters to those who are trying to save money, as some rooms can be had for as little as $181 per night. This hotel is beautiful on the inside and the outside, and it is one of Rome’s most centrally-located hotels.

The Residenza Cellini is a great place to look if you want a higher-end option for a little bit less. This hotel is great for a romantic weekend or even for a week-long stay, and it has a great location, with high-end rooms costing around $300 per night.

image

Look to the Cassia if you are working on a more modest budget but do not want your hotel experience to ruin your week! The service here is as outstanding as anything you will find anywhere else, and the rooms range from as low as $50 to $125 per night. The Cassia has everything you will need, and it cannot be beat if you are traveling to Rome on a bit of a smaller budget.

A trip to Rome can be a dream or it can be a disaster, and which way it turns out depends largely upon the accommodations you have on your trip. No matter what your needs are in your visit to Rome, you can fulfill them with any of these three hotels.

How To Increase Your Vocabulary

The more you advance in age, and the more life experience you accumulate, the more you come to realize that your English teachers were not just blowing smoke when they told you that it would be useful to have an extensive and well-rounded vocabulary. At the same time, however, it can be difficult to know exactly what to do in order to increase your vocabulary at this point, especially when there is not exactly the immediate motivation that used to be there when you needed to take a test in school!

Of course, no longer being in school also means that you are no longer being given a grade on how well you can define a particular word, which means that you do not need to be able to give a word-for-word definition of what a particular word means; rather, you simply need to be able to use words correctly, and you need to understand what people are meaning to say when they use a particular word.

When students are in school, they think it is funny that people tell them to increase their vocabulary by reading, as they wonder how reading the word will help them if they do not know what the word means; of course, the reason students feel this way is because they are used to having to “define” words, but once you no longer need to create word-for-word definitions, reading is a great way to expand your vocabulary.

Another excellent way to expand your vocabulary is by listening to such radio stations as National Public Radio, or by listening to talk radio stations, or even by listening to books on tape; you will begin to become more and more comfortable with words as you begin to spend more and more time surrounding yourself with them.

And of course, the best way of all to learn new words is by studying – and even though you are no longer in school, and therefore no longer “have to” study words, taking the time to do this can go a long way in improving the vocabulary you have to work with!
