There are a very large number of options televisions on the market right now and it can be tough to distinguish between them. You have seen LED, plasma, and LCD TV’s advertised but what are the differences between them? They all basically look the same but clearly the technology is different.

The oldest television (when it comes to the technology) is the plasma screen television. The pictures you see are created by gas trapped between two sheets of glass. Plasma televisions work best in darker rooms.  These TVs give out standing contrast, the whites are really white and the blacks are black. The glass screen can catch quite a bit of light and cause glare on the shiny glass. Viewing angles are not an issue with plasma televisions as they can be with LCDs. Of the three types of televisions the plasma televisions are the heaviest.

LCD Televisions have a matte screen so they can be more easily viewed in a brighter room, but they don’t look quite as nice in a darker room sometimes. The display is lit up by florescent tubes behind the screen. These are slimmer then the plasma TVs and much lighter. One thing you may find with the LCDs that is not favorable is the veiwing angle can greatly effect your viewing pleasure.

LED televisions are LCD TVs that use LEDs instead of florescent tubes for backlighting. You will see outstanding black colors and lots of contrast with an LED television. You will find your LED will either be side lit or backlit by LEDs. It is important to do your research when considering the side ilt LED television because there have been complaints about distortions with them. The LED TVs can be very energy efficient compared to the plasma and LCD televisions. LED television are the highest priced of the three television types.
